1,235,658. Carboxylic acid N,N-dialkylamides. JAPAN GAS CHEMICAL CO. Inc. 8 May, 1969 [9 May, 1968], No. 23622/69. Heading C2C. Carboxylic acid N,N-dialkylamides are prepared by reacting a tri-(C 1-3 alkyl) amine with an acyl group-containing compound or a compound capable of forming such a compound under the reaction conditions, and with carbon monoxide in the presence of a metal carbonyl catalyst under a pressure of 100-600 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> (gauge) and a temperature of 150-320‹ C. The preferred amine is trimethylamine and the acyl compound may be acetic acid or an ester thereof, or methanol which is converted to acetic acid under the reaction conditions. The catalyst is advantageously Co, Ni or Fe carbonyl and may be present in an amount of 0.001-0.2 gram atoms of metal per mole of amine. A halogen or metal halide may also be present, e.g. Br 2 , I 2 , NaBr or KI. A solvent such as a carboxylic acid amide, a hydrocarbon, a ketone, an N-alkyl lactam a C 2-3 aliphatic nitrile or water may also be present. Amongst the examples, trimethylamine and acetic acid are reacted using a CO carbonyl catalyst to give N,N-dimethylacetamide and the same product is obtained from trimethylamine, methanol and acetic acid. |
