A method of and an apparatus for driving a switched reluctance motor 21 at high speed, wherein when the rotating speed of the rotor (2) Figs 5 and 6) of a switched reluctance motor increases over a predetermined speed, the order of the excitation of the stator coils (+A, -A, +B, -B, +C, -C) of the switched reluctance motor is changed to obtain a rotor shift angle corresponding to twice that in a normal mode. Accordingly, it is possible to drive the motor at high speed without varying the dwell angle of position sensors or stator coils.
