A sliding caliper disc brake having a carrier (1A) intended for fixing to a vehicle, and a caliper (1B) mounted for sliding movement relative to the carrier (1A). The carrier (1A) contains opposed friction pads (2,3) for braking engagement with a rotary disc. The pads (2,3) are supported within the carrier (1A) by engagement of external surface portions (11,13) thereof with support surfaces (6,7,8,9) of the carrier (1A). Surface portions (2C) of the pads (2,3) engage torque-reacting surfaces (4C,5C) of the carrier (1A). The pad external profile is asymmetrical and the support and torque-reacting surfaces (6,7,8,9,4C,5C) of the respective carrier openings are arranged so that their positions in the carrier (1A) correspond when the respective openings are seen from opposite sides of the carrier (1A).
