An operator for a casement supported in a frame by a pair of stays at the top and bottom of the casement has a drive mechanism with an operating arm 19 for controlling pivotal movement of the casement and a locking arm 25 for controlling actuation of a fastening mechanism to secure the casement in the closed position. The drive mechanism transmits movement of an operating handle 14 to the operating arm 19 and the locking arm 25 in sequence via a worm 35 and gear 32 so that the fastening mechanism is actuated only in the closed position. The sequential operation is achieved via pin 42 and slot 40, 43, 44 arrangement which connects the gear 32 to the locking arm 25 when the casement is closed and connects the gear 32 to the operating arm 19 when the fastening mechanism is unlocked. The input to the drive mechanism may be motorised.
