<p>In an optical fibre dispenser, such as is used to dispense fibre into the environment as for the transmission of guidance commands to a remotely operated vehicle, a single coil is replaced by a series of coils, each of which is bypassed temporarily with a short-low-loss frangible link. By this method the Winding Increment of Attenuation of each coil is effectively "bypassed", enabling low power transmitter and receivers and in particular smaller diameter coils to be used. In one embodiment, four dispenser coils A, B, C, D have their fibres FA, FB, FC, FD joined in series enabling payout of the full fibre link to the effected. Each coil, except A, is by-passed by a parallel short low loss optical link LB, LC, LD, the joins being effected by Y-couplings YB1, 2; YC1, 2; and YD1, 2. Each link incorporates a local point BB, BC, BD such that tensile load on the link during dispensing of the fibre will break the link.</p> |
