<p>A ligating clip applier mechanism having jaws (94,104) disposed substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the mechanism. The jaws provide positive rearward retention (107) of a ligating clip (120). Clips formed with the mechanism have substantially reduced apex gaps (122) and clip gaps.
