Toluene-soluble modified rosin acid esters (I) are claimed, which are obtd. by reacting (a) rosin (acid), (b) alpha , beta -ethylenically unsatd. carboxylic acid(s) or anhydride(s), (c) phenols which are multifunctional w.r.t. oxo cpds., (d) aldehydes or their acetals, (e) alcohols with at least 2 OH gps., and opt. (f) fatty acids or esters, (g) ethylenically unsatd. monomers, and (h) ethylenically unsatd. hydrocarbon resins in the presence of (i) mono- or divalent metal cpd(s). at 100-300 degrees C, with elimination of water, until the acid no. is less than 100 mg KOH/g resin; and then reacting the prod. with (j) carboxylic acids, which contains at least 2 COOH gps. and are not alpha , beta -ethylenically unsatd., or their anhydrides at 200-300 degrees C. |
