PURPOSE: To obtain a cariostatic agent comprising an extract extracted from grain skin of seed of a gramineous plant as an active ingredient, by using an inexpensive natural material as a raw material, suppressing formation of sordes on tooth, having no problems in terms of safety, useful as a dentifrice, etc. CONSTITUTION: This cariostatic agent comprises an extract having glycosyl transferase inhibiting activity, extracted from grain skin of a gramineous plant preferably belonging to the genus Hordeum or Triticum with an aqueous solution of an alkali (e.g. 0.2-0.7 N sodium hydroxide) or its hydrolyzate as an active ingredient. The extract has preferably >=10,000 molecular weight and is preferably both positive in phenol sulfuric acid color reaction and copper Folin color reaction. In the extraction, for example, the amount of the aqueous solution of the alkali is 10-50 times as much as that of the grain skin and the extraction is preferably carried out in a temperature range of a room temperature to the boiling point of the solvent for 3 minutes to 24 hours. |
