PURPOSE: To produce a hot rolled austenitic stainless steel plate and a cold rolled austenitic stainless steel sheet, free from surface flaw and excellent in surface characteristic. CONSTITUTION: A continuously cast slab of austenitic stainless steel is soaked in a heating furnace filled with oxidizing atmosphere at a temp. of T deg.C, satisfying 20<=t<=2980-2.3T, for (t)min when slab surface is non-treated and at a temp. of T deg.C, satisfying 20<=t<=2300-1.8T, for (t)min while regulating surface roughness (Rmax) to <=100μm when the slab surface is treated. At this time, T is soaking temp. ( deg.C) and (t) is soaking time (min). Then the cast slab is hot-rolled, by which the hot rolled steel plate is produced. Further, this hot rolled steel plate is annealed, pickled, cold-rolled, and annealed, by which the cold rolled steel sheet is produced.
