Glycol monoethers of phenols are prepared by reacting the latter with 1,2-epoxides at an elevated temperature, in presence of a thioether, sulphoxide, organic phosphine, aminocarboxylic acid, aminosulphonic acid or a compound containing a -C(:O)N< or -C(:S)N< group. Examples describe reaction of ethylene oxide with phenol, o-cresol, pentachlorophenol, 2- or 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and 2,4-dinitrophenol, to give their 2-hydroxyethyl ethers.
