PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a porous material having a high specific surface area by adding an alkylamine to a fine powder of a layer compound, carrying out the intercalating reaction, then adding a tetraalkoxysilane to the reactional product, preparing a nanocomposite and then heat-treating the prepared nanocomposite. SOLUTION: This porous material comprises silica columns between layers of an H-iolite or a layer phosphate. The porous material is obtained by adding a liquid alkylamine in a volume of >=5cm<3> based on 1g fine powder to the fine powder of an acid treatment product of a polyphyllosilicate or a layer phosphate having <=100μm average particle diameter, providing a suspension containing the fine powder suspended in the alkylamine, carrying out the intercalating reaction in this state at ambient temperature to 100 deg.C for >=2hr and then adding a tetraalkoxysilane in a volume of 10-120cm<3> based on 1g fine powder without separating the solid from a liquid, conducting the reaction at ambient temperature to 100 deg.C for 30min to 24hr, producing the nanocomposite, separating and recovering the resultant nanocomposite from the suspension, drying the recovered nanocomposite at <=100 deg.C and subsequently heat- treating the dried nanocomposite at >=550 deg.C.
