A machine for gathering together the open end of a bag and applying an adhesive tape around the gathered together neck of the bag to seal the bag. The machine includes a guide which receives the open end of the bag, a follow-up member which pushes the open end of the bag towards an adhesive tape which is pulled by a gripper, and a clamp to clamp the tape around the neck of the bag. The follow-up member is controlled in response to a first sensor which detects the presence of the bag, and the gripper is controlled by a second sensor which detects when the bag contacts the adhesive tape.
