1178114 Super-conductors IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 18 Jan 1967 [27 Jan 1966 10 June 1966] 3757/66 and 25976/66 Headings H1A A5 and A4D A composite conductor is manufactured by mechanically working at an elevated temperature (high enough to bond but below the eutectic) a plurality of super-conductor elements with a "normal" conductive material to provide a plurality of super-conductor filaments or layers bonded to and within a matrix of "normal" material. Fig. 2 shows an assembly of Nb-44 wt. per cent Ti alloy rods S and copper rods C in a copper container T. The container is evacuated and sealed and extruded at 350-550‹C. Alternatively, sheet materials (with slots) may be used. The super-conductor may consist of niobium, or niobium alloyed with zirconium, titanium and hafnium and may contain as interstitial elements carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen. The "normal" material may consist of copper, aluminium, silver, indium or cadmium. Other heattreatments are described. The mechanical working may consist of extrusion, drawing, rolling, forging or swaging. |
