Drying and consolidating walls etc. involves spreading respective electrolytes, contg. ionisable components which combine to form a ppte., over respective sides of the wall and creating a continuous electric field between the two wall faces to cause migration of ions of the ionisable components in opposite directions towards the wall, one of the components being an alkaline earth metal salt. The novelty is that the other ionisable component is a mixt. of potassium silicate and an ionisable cpd., a mixt. of a resin (pref. a fluorine-contg. acrylic copolymer resin or silicone resin), or organic gel (pref. a cellulosic (e.g. ethyl methyl cellulose) gel) and an ionising cpd., ammonium sulphate or aluminium stearate. Also claimed are: (i) appts. for carrying out the above method; and (ii) a kit for carrying out the above method.
