The sorter has at least one operative's position (1) situated on at least one side of a conveyor belt (2) with a feeder (30) at one end and bins (16,17) adjacent to the operative's positions to receive material taken from the conveyor. The conveyor and operatives' positions are mounted on a platform (10) with folding supporting legs (11) which, when deployed, raise the platform to a level above the receiving bins so that the operatives can drop sorted materials into them. The outlet end of the conveyor has a transverse discharger for removing any materials which have not been removed by the sorting operatives. On the opposite side to the operatives' positions the conveyor has an oblique guide which pushes the material towards the operatives to place it within their reach. One end of the platform has a raised side (18) with a transverse bar (19) at the top for loading the platform on to a truck (21) with the aid of an hydraulic arm (20).
