摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate mounting and to improve the service life and gas sealability over a long period of time by setting the thickness and restoration surface pressure of a monolith holding material to the respectively specific values at the time of obtaining this holding material by impregnating an aluminous fiber mat with an org. binder liquid and compressing this mat in a thickness direction, then removing a medium liquid. SOLUTION: The production of the monolith holding material 3 is executed by first impregnating the base material consisting of the aluminous fibers with the org. binder liquid in a first stage. This base plate material is then compressed in a thickness direction in a second stage. The medium liquid of the org. binder liquid is removed while the thickness of the base material mat is maintained in the compressed state in a third stage, by which the monolith holding material is obtd. The thickness of the monolith holding material obtd. in this third stage is 1 to 1.5 times the compression thickness of the time when the mat is compressed in the second stage. The monolith holding material has the thickness restoration property in the state of releasing both sides when the org. binder is thermally decomposed. The restoration surface pressure in the compressed state of the thickness corresponding to the clearance formed of the outer peripheral surface of the monolith 1 and the inner peripheral surface of a metallic casing 2 is set at 0.5 to 30kg/cm<2> .
