An activatable dry primary cell comprises (a) a casing containing electrodes and a depolarizer and having an opening for addition of activating liquid, (b) a lid closing the opening and (c) an indicator to show when the cell is activated. In the particular embodiment shown transparent plastics casing 2 contains zinc can 1, separator 14, depolarizer 15 and carbon rod 16. Lid 10 is screw-threaded and includes contact cap 13. Coloured paper indicator ring 8 fades or changes colour when water is added. Contact plate 4 is of metal. Separator 14 and disc 17 are impregnated with a wetting agent, e.g. an alkylbenzene sulphonate or alkylnaphthalene sulphonate. The volume of the lid is equal to the volume of activating liquid required or a submultiple of it. |
