Absorbent element, such as sanitary towels or baby nappies, has a core hydrophilic absorbent material, and a cover of hydrophobic material with an opening on the side facing the liquid to be absorbed, this opening being covered by a liquid permeable layer of water-resistant or non-water-resistance paper, woven or nonwoven fabric. The cover consists of a dimensionally stable hydrophobic material in the form of a soft, liquid foam of a synthetic organic material, and is separated from the absorbent core by a liquid-tight film which is folded back around the lengthwise sides of the opening on the outside of the cover and is fastened to the core at a distance of 1-100 mm, pref. 15 mm, from the opening. The liquid-tight film is pref. formed by a layer of (non)water-resistant paper of (non)-woven fabric). The hydrophobic absorbent material pref. consists of corminated cellulose, esp. wood cellulose, cotton cellulose or regenerated cellulose. The hydrophobic material is pref. a soft foam comprised of polyurethane, polystyrene, polyethylene, or PVC. The foam cover allows liquid to pass through to the absorbent core, and does not retain liquid itself. The cover is soft, comfortable to wear, and readily accommodates to the shape of the body. The absorbent element is relatively cheap to manufacture. |
