The computer communication system has a first buffer memory (20,30) at the sender to hold only request-to-send messages that are to be delivered to the network over the bi-directional serial links. A second buffer memory (21,31) at the sender holds only responses to request-to-sent messages. A first buffer memory (22,32) at the receiver holds only request-to-send messages received from other computers, while a second buffer memory (23,33) at the receiver holds only responses to these requests. A first controller (24,34) authorises transfer of a message from the first buffer if the buffer in the receiving machine has space to receive the message, using tokens to control flow of messages.
