The cleaning system cleans and/or disinfects the lying surface of the sun bed, directly before and/or after a tanning operation. The cleaning system is integrated in the radiation unit or can be fitted as an auxiliary unit. The hood can be hydraulically, pneumatically or mechanically raised and lowered, and during the cleaning operation is arrestable in a previously determined position. The hood before and with the cleaning process is closed for a time, such that an entry of a person on the sun bed is impossible.
