Thermal dye transfer system containing a N-arylimidoethylidene-benz¬c,d indole dye precursor

The thermal dye transfer assembly has (a) a dye-donor element having a support carrying a dye layer superposed with (b) a dye-receiving element having a support carrying a polymeric dye image-receiving layer. The dye layer contains (i) an N-arylimido-ethylidene-benz(c,d)-indole dye precursor dispersed in a polymeric binder. The receiving layer contg. an org. acid capable of converting the dye precursor into a cationic magenta anilinovinyl-benz(c,d)indolium dye. Also claimed is a process of forming a dye transfer image involving image-wise heating the dye donor element transferring the dye precursor imagewise to the receiver.
