The signal device has a housing (20) provided with a cover hood (21) having printed characters or graphic symbols on its front, rear and side faces. The cover hood is fitted to a base with a water-tight seal between them, the base provided with fixings for securing the signal device to the roof of a vehicle, e.g. a taxi. The housing is streamlined in the vehicle travel direction, the hood having a top section parallel to the vehicle roof, continuous with the outwards angled front, rear and side faces.
