The solar sensor (43) has a sensitivity in the wave length band from the visible light region to the infra-red region and a spectral sensitivity with a sensitivity ratio (a) within the range of 0.8 to 5.0., i.e. the ratio of sensitivity for wavelengths longer than 700 nm to that for wavelengths shorter than 700 nm. The ratio (a) can lie within the range 1 to 3. The sensor can consist of a sensor element to generate a signal depending on the strength of the sun's radiation and a cover, transparent to light, for the sensor and a support socket. The cover can transmit selectively sunlight having a wavelength band lying between 500 nm and 800 nm.
