1302054 Seaming ALPURA AG 27 July 1970 [29 July 1969] 36213/70 Heading B5K [Also in Divisions A5 and D1] Apparatus useful in sterilizing a plastics packaging web comprises a tank 14 into which dips a barrier wall, e.g. tube 17, so as to divide the tank into two separate chambers. The web 12 passes into the liquid 16 (e.g. 20% H 2 O 2 ), goes round a point of reversal 19 below the barrier and leaves the liquid in a region which is maintained sterile. The barrier wall extends into the working depth of the tank at least halfway towards the point of reversal. As described, further sterilization may be effected by heaters 61, the web then being formed into a tube which is filled with, e.g. milk, at 27 and lap-welded at 39 prior to being welded at 32 into tetrahedral packages 33 by heated anvils 31. The packager is enclosed by walls 21 forming a closed sterile space 22. Air at 200‹ C. may be supplied to this space by blower/heater 35-36 via sterile filter 37. This hot air may be used to melt the web prior to lap-welding. Anvils 31 are carried on a moving endless belt 30 and a further set of anvils is provided at right angles to those shown. |
