The method involves deriving a parameter representing the occupant's body size or wt. and adjusting the level of the force limitation depending on this parameter. For a system with an inflatable restraint element, the force level is set so that force characteristic decreases in a region of displacement after which contact between the safety belt and inflatable element is anticipated. An Independent claim is also included for a force limiter for a safety belt system.
