The adaptive filter method involves using a parametric model of the patient or object being scanned. The characteristics of the adaptive filter are computed from a profile complementary to a mean profile. This profile is obtained either from the mean profile from different angles of incidence to the target, or from the mean profile obtained by taking different angles of incidence on a family of models of differing shapes and attenuation. The characteristics of the adaptive filter are computed at all points over some or all the profile using a linear coefficient computed from the thickness of the filter, the value of flux transmitted through the target and the minimal value of flux emitted by the source.
