The end part (4) of the distal end (3) of a catheter has a sleeve (8) of non-elastic material. In the sleeve is formed a plug (9) with a stretchable lumen (11) which is tightly compressed in the free state. Since the sleeve, which in the end part forms the wall of the basic body, is non-elastic, with the expansion of the plug the dia. of the catheter does not increase at the location of the end part. Such a deformation of the plug takes place when a guide wire (6) is inserted through it. By reason of the rigid formation of the basic body around the plug, the material of the plug can only be displaced in an axial direction. Through the insertion of the catheter, an introductory sheath with a larger dia. does not have to be used. The plug forms a valve which closes off the distal end of the lumen (5).
