At the distal end of the catheter, a first dilation balloon (4) is mounted coaxially around the central electrode (9). Further back on the catheter is a second balloon (5) with a gripping mesh (6) on its outside. Between the two balloons is an ultrasonic probe (7). The probe consists of an array of piezo-electric elements (15). The piezo elements are fed via a multiplexer circuit (16). The multiplexing action allows phased activation of the piezo crystals.
