1,137,631. Di- and tri-chloroethane. FMC CORP. 5 Sept., 1966 [14 Sept., 1965], No. 39551/66. Heading C2C. Dichloroethane and trichloroethane are produced by contacting chlorine and ethylene in the vapour-phase at 80-350‹ C. in a molar ratio of chlorine to ethylene of 1: 1 to 2: 1 for at least 0À1 second in a catalyst and diluent bed comprising 50-100% by weight of 2-100 mesh (U.S. Standard) particles of Nacl, KCl or mixtures thereof and 0-50% of total bed weight of solids inert or catalystic to the reaction, and recovering the gaseous reaction products containing dichloroethane and trichloroethane. An inert diluent gas may be present. Tetra- and penta-chloroethane and vinyl chloride are produced in small amounts as by-products. |
