The shear has a tool (15) which is mounted on a head moved horizontally to and from by a driven thrust rod (10,16). The rod is in halves (16',16") joined together at their adjacent ends by transverse movement of the mating halves (22,23) of an enclosing sleeve (21). This movement (27) couples the halves positively together, after which they are secured by a locking device. The rod half coupled to the tool can be so mounted in the enclosing top sleeve half (23) that it cannot work loose. The device can comprise a body sliding on the sleeve in the axial direction between two stops.
