A calender roller, esp. a roller with end closures (10), has a synthetic resilient covering (3) with a greater internal diameter than the external diameter of the roller body (2). In the space between them is a support structure (5) which transmits the forces on the covering (3) to the roller body (2). The support structure can consist of a number of discs held together by clamping plates (11) and compression nuts (12). The thickness of the support structure (5) is 30-100% of the roller body radius and it has a lower density, pref. less than 3.5 kg/dm<3>. It is built of cellular material with the cell walls running in a radial direction. The structure can consist of several layers of cylindrically shaped honeycomb material. Alternatively it can be of corrugated cardboard shape or with rectangular cells. The material can be fibre reinforced synthetic, esp. aramid reinforced with hardenable resin. Alternatively it can be of light alloy or wood, esp. balsa wood. |
