Apparatus for successively separating capsules 16, Fig. 1, e.g. for bottles, from a stick 2 of nested capsules, comprises a head 18 having a wall which is deformable to engage or release the capsules, the head being mounted for reciprocation towards and away from the stick 2 to move the leading capsule away from the rest of the stick, the latter being restrained from movement by pressure means. The stick 2 is gravity fed down a shoot 3 and when the last capsule has moved beyond a microswitch a further stick of capsules is supplied to the shoot 3 from a sloping table (4), Fig. 4 (not shown), by a pivotally mounted cradle 11 operated by a pneumatic actuator 13. The shoot 3 is adjustably mounted on a stand 9 which also supports a sliding block having attached thereto the head 18. The latter comprises a easing secured to a sleeve 23 which is rotatably mounted in a bearing 21a. A spring- loaded rod 24 is slidably mounted in the sleeve 23 and when the head 18 is near the end of its rearward stroke the rod 24 engages an adjustable fixed stop 28 to eject the capsule carried by the head. The deformable wall is formed by a rubber diaphragm within the casing, an annular chamber between the diaphragm and the casing being connected to a source of compressed air. The sliding block is driven by a motor 29, through a belt drive 29a, reduction and other gearing and a crank and connecting rod. The motor 29 also drives a cam shaft carrying four cams one of which operates the pressure means 19, another operates the stop 17, another rotates the sleeve 23, and the fourth controls the compressed air flow to the head 18. When a capsule is ejected from the head 18 it drops into a trough 40 along which it is moved by a member 41 mounted on the bearing 21a, during the next forward stroke of the head. The trough 40 leads to a platform on to which the capsule topples but on which the capsule is retained by a member 42 until the head again moves rearwardly whereupon the capsule rolls on to a delivery slab 7. In a second embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the head 18 comprises a steel bush having an opening for extension therethrough of the rod 24 and having a hole for connection to a vacuum source. The deformable wall is formed by a rubber bush which normally engages the capsules but which in response to the vacuum releases the capsules. Instead of the head 18 engaging the capsules from the outside it may engage them from the inside. The wall of the head may be deformable by fluid or spring pressure or other mechanical device. |
