The new gp120 receptors or binding sites of the invention are found on CD4+ cells, but differ from the CD4 binding receptor which is blocked when reacting CD4+ cell with a monoclonal antibody directed against the gp120 binding site of CD4, they give interactions with gp120, such as those obtained when reacting gp120 with CD4+ cells in the absence of serum and at a gp120 to cell ratio of 0.5 .mu.g/ml for about 106 cells/ml.
