An electromagnetic sensor comprising a coil (2) combined with a highly magnetically permeable core (1) in the form of a flat plate, said coil being attached to one surface of the core and having an axis of symmetry perpendicular to the core surface to which it is attached, as well as a thickness greater than the coil dimension along said axis of symmetry, whereby the magnetic field lines (4) generated by energising the coil are all substantially within the core.
