1,263,520. Electro-chemical analysis. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept.9, 1969 [Sept.16, 19681, No.44430/69. Heading G1N. In an electro-chemical cell for measuring the partial pressure of a gas particularly oxygen and having a diffusion barrier with a catalytic electrode on the inner face, the CATALYST is a THIN COATING e.g. of gold, palladium or platinum formed preferably by electroless coating on a non-gas-absorbent layer e.g. of nickel or stainless steel. The diffusion barrier for oxygen is preferably polyphenylene oxide. In one example the substrate is a nickel or stainless steel powder, formed into a slurry with barrier material solvent and deposited by silkscreen techniques thereon, Fig.1 (not shown), alternatively the powder may be sintered and hot pressed into the barrier Fig.2 (not shown). The CELL may have an aqueous (hydroxide) electrolyte with a copper counter electrode for the determination of oxygen. Alternatives: (i) the electrolyte may be replaced by an ion exchange resin layer. (ii) the counter electrode may be a catalytic cathode with a hydrogen supply. |
