A curable, polymer-based composite material consists essentially of a curable polymeric component, and iron ferrite particles. The polymeric component may be a styrene butadiene resin. The composite material may be a sports article having a rollable shape which is generally spherical and with a size that accommodates use as a puck-like object (11) for playing hockey. The body includes a central substantially uncured section and an outer substantially cured section. The composite material (10) may also be a fishing weight or be used as a lead substitute which is magnetizable. The composite material (10) may also be used in sound-dampening system that includes a first layer of an expanded polymeric material bonded to the first layer. A method of forming a filled rubber composite material (10) comprising a curable rubber-based resin, and filler, which may be said iron ferrite particles is also disclosed.
