Shaft packing with trapezoidal cross-section for a better pressure transfer

A stuffer box packing of trapezoidal cross-section has its broad side against the radial outer wall and the narrow side against the shaft. By using centre cords and/or inner cords below the horizontal centre line of the packing, the flanks of the trapezoidal section are given convex sides which do not extend over the entire width of the flank.
