Miniaturized light-activated lamp control apparatus includes thin disk-shaped switching unit (10) positionable within light socket (102) and thin light conductor (14) having one end attached thereto and being extendable through the gap between electrically conductive inner wall (110) of socket (102) and electrically conductive outer surface (119) of bulb base (104), and terminating at lens (12) for gathering ambient or other light. Switching unit (10) has contact (20) on one side for engagement with socket center terminal (116), and contact (114) on an opposing side for engagement with center terminal (112) of bulb (104). Unit (10) includes circuit board (16) having control circuitry mounted thereon and positioned to occupy space between bulb base (126) and circuit board (16). Mounted on board (16) and communicating with conductor (14) is photodetector (144) electrically coupled to the control circuitry. The control circuitry receives operating power from the lamp through the first contact and is responsive to light communicated through light conductor (14) to turn the power to the second contact off and on.
