In a transmission system for transmitting digital symbols according to a phase constellation, a transmitter (2) is provided with a phase modulator (8) and a frequency multiplier (18) to obtain a modulated carrier signal. To prevent degradation of the modulated carrier signal, the input constellation of the frequency multiplier (18) has at least one additional phase state with respect to the output constellation of the frequency multiplier. Advantageously, the number of phase states of the constellation at the input of the frequency multiplier (18) is N times the number of phase states of the constellation at the output of the frequency multipplier (18).
