Apparatus for draining fluid from a cavity comprises a one-piece chamber unit providing a chamber 28 to receive and trap liquid collected through an inlet port 32, a chamber 20, 26 to hold a liquid seal 20A, 26A which separates the trap chamber from an outlet port 22, and a manometer chamber 16, 18 with one limb connected to the outlet side of the seal chamber and the other limb open to atmospheric pressure, whereby liquid from the cavity may be collected in the trap chamber and gases from the cavity may be caused to pass through the trap chamber and the liquid in the seal chamber to the outlet port. As shown, the receptacle of transparent plastics material is connected to the pleural cavity by tubes 34, 36 and is arranged on a base 14 in which is a suction pump 72 able to apply negative pressure to the cavity via tubes 64, 24, the seal passage 20, 26, and the liquid collecting chamber 28. The apparatus also includes a motor 70, a pressure control 74, (60), a moisture trap 76, a lighting element 80, graduations on the manometer and chamber 28, and a grommet (46) by which liquid may be sampled from the chamber 28. The receptable has a handle 44 and may be disposable, and the apparatus may be used to drain fluids without using the liquid seal and the suction pump.
