PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium which is good in yield in spite of a coating type, exhibits a reproduced output of high-frequency region equiv. to that of a vapor deposited tape and has good surface roughness, good electromagnetic conversion characteristics, such as C/N, and excellent traveling durability, and a process for producing the same. CONSTITUTION: This magnetic recording medium has at least >=2 layers obtd. by forming a lower nonmagnetic layer contg. at least nonmagnetic powder and binder on a flexible base and forming an upper magnetic layer contg. ferromagnetic powder and binder thereon while the lower nonmagnetic layer is wet. The average value (d) of the dry thickness of the upper magnetic layer is <=1μm and the ferromagnetic powder contained in this layer is acicular ferromagnetic powder. The nonmagnetic powder contained in the lower nonmagnetic layer is an inorg. powder having Mohs hardness of >=3 and the average grain size thereof is <=1/3 the major axis length of the acicular ferromagnetic powder contained in the upper magnetic layer.
