PURPOSE: To effectively suppress a knocking while minimizing the deterioration of engine fuel consumption or the rise of exhaust air temperature. CONSTITUTION: This device has an ECU 30 for controlling a variable valve timing device 10 for changing the rotating phase of the cam shaft 1 of an internal combustion engine and regulating the engine valve timing. The ECU 30 controls the variable valve timing device to lag the engine valve timing when a knocking occurs in the engine, and sets the phase lag of the valve timing larger when the knock intensity detected by a knock sensor 50 is higher.
