A chest enclosure for use in producing assisted ventilation of the lungs of a patient comprises a chest covering shell (14) for fitting over a patient's chest and as a base member a non-evacuatable, flexible envelope (10) containing a multitude of small plastics bead particles (12) which envelope can be shaped to conform to a patient's body shape and into which side portions of the shell can be impressed, whereafter by compaction of said particles together, the resulting shape of the base member may be maintained, resisting movement of said side portions of said shell in response to pressure changes within the shell in use. |
