PURPOSE: To easily obtain an α-cyanobenzyl ester compound in high purity and yield while suppressing the formation of by-products. CONSTITUTION: The objective (z-cyanobenzyl ester compound of formula II is produced by reacting an acid halide or acid anhydride of formula R-CO-X [X is a halogen or O-CO-R; R is a group of formula I (R1 to R4 are each H or a lower alkyl), etc.] with 3-phenoxybenzaldehyde and an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal cyanide in a binary phase solvent consisting of an inert organic solvent and water (e.g. toluene-water) at -10 deg.C to +50 deg.C. In the above reaction, the reaction system is charged with the acid halide or the acid anhydride in combination with the 3-phenoxybenzaldehyde. The amount of the acid halide or the acid anhydride is 0.95-1.1mol, that of the cyanide is 1-1.5mol and that of a phase transfer catalyst is 0.1-2mol based on 1mol of the 3- phenoxybenzaldehyde. The content of by-products such as benzoyl ester in the product is extremely low, i.e., at most 0.5%. |
