PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new compound useful as a raw material, feedstock component, additive etc., for highly functional resins in the areas of e.g. synthetic resins, fibers, inks and coating materials, by reaction of a specific unsaturated diol with (meth)acrylic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst followed by oxidation. CONSTITUTION: This new compound is expressed by formula I (R<1> and R<2> are each a single bond or 1-10C alkylene; R<3> and R<4> are each H or methyl), being useful as a monomer for highly functional resins, or as a raw material, feedstock component or additive, etc., various polymers, oligomers and resin compositions containing them in the areas of synthetic resins, fibers, inks and coating materials. This compound is obtained by reaction of an unsaturated diol of formula II (e.g. 2-butene-1,4-diol) with (meth)acrylic acrid in the presence of an acid catalyst (e.g. sulfuric acid) to form a (meth)acrylic ester of formula III which is then treated with an organic peroxide (e.g. m-chloroperbenzoic acid) to effect epoxidization. |
