PURPOSE: To easily produce a high density and high strength β"-alumina sintered compact while considerably reducing the number of processes as compared with the zeta-process and to obtain a β"-alumina sintered compact having a low initial value of Na<+> ionic conduction resistance while increasing the rate of formation of β"-alumina as compared with the SSSD process. CONSTITUTION: The objective β"-alumina sintered compact. is produced through a process for preparing an aq. slurry contg. powdery alumina or a powdery Al compd. convertible into alumina by heat treatment, a powdery Na compd. and a powdery lithium aluminate compd. [Li2 O.XAl2 O3 (1<=X<=4)] as a stabilizer, a process for forming granules for compacting by spray-drying the slurry, a process for forming a compact of a prescribed shape by press-compacting the granules and a process for firing the compact. The powdery lithium aluminate compd. has been previously calcined at >=1,000 deg.C and the average particle diameter of the compd. is <=3μm. |
