The tubular fuel rod consists of concentric cans with the fuel arranged in the annulus between them but separated from them by interlayers. The interlayers are a ceramic uranium compound with a natural or enriched concentration of fissile isotopes. The fuel is a ceramic plutonium compound or a mixture of uranium and plutonium compounds or a ceramic uranium compound enriched in fissile atoms.
