The actuator circuit uses the self-inductance (13) of the actuator coil as part of a circuit that generates an over-voltage to speed operation of the actuator. The circuit is supplied from a low tension direct current source (15), and is in the form of a bridge circuit with the actuator inductance forming the link arm. The voltage supply is in one arm of the bridge. Two diagonally opposite arms of the bridge are formed by MOSFET switches (S1,S2). The other arms are formed by diodes (D1,D2). A current is established in the inductance by closing one of the switches (S1), then the switch is opened, diverting the current through a diode (D1) to charge a capacitor (14) which charges to a voltage higher than the supply voltage.
