The registration plate illumination has the light source and the reflector placed on opposite sides of the registration plate. The light source (20) is set in the top surface of the bumper bar (22), directing light upward to a reflector (34) extending approximately horizontally from the rear panel (10) of the vehicle. The reflector is above the registration plate (12). The underside of the reflector has a concave curve to focus the light over the width of the registration plate. The reflector extends the width of the registration plate. Alternatively the light source could be attached to the rear panel and the reflector set on the top edge of the bumper.
