Plantable retaining wall and block therefor

The wall is formed from a plurality of rows of plantable retaining-wall blocks. Each block has a cavity for receiving plants which is formed in an upper surface. The cavity for receiving plants is located between parts of the lateral walls which are generally parallel to the front face of the block. The wall is constructed so that the blocks in each row are offset in order to reveal a substantial part of the plant-receiving cavity in each block. The configuration of the individual wall blocks allows the wall to be constructed with a substantially vertical orientation. The wall blocks may include alignment means and connection means which allow the blocks to be aligned and stabilized with respect to the blocks in adjacent rows of the retaining wall.
